When to Visit Rwanda

Rwanda is a year-round destination, with each season offering its unique appeal. The country experiences two rainy seasons: the longer rains from mid-February to early June, and the shorter rains from mid-September to mid-December. During these periods—especially from March to May—rainfall can be heavy, particularly in the mountainous regions.

The long dry season, from June to September, is considered the best time for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and for hiking adventures in Nyungwe Forest Reserve.

Itinerary

Day 1-2: Kigali, Central Rwanda

Your Rwandan adventure begins in the vibrant capital, Kigali. Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly welcomed and transferred to The Retreat by Heaven, a boutique luxury hotel renowned as the premier place to stay in the city.

Unwind after your journey with a refreshing dip in the pool, a rejuvenating yoga session, or a delectable meal at the hotel’s acclaimed on-site restaurant, one of Kigali’s culinary highlights. It’s the ideal place to relax and reset before embarking on the next leg of your journey.

The following day, you’ll be taken by private transfer to Akagera National Park, where your safari experience begins.

Accommodation: The Retreat by Heaven (1 night)

Spend three unforgettable nights at Magashi Camp, a serene and stylish tented retreat set along the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga. Nestled within 10,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, this exclusive safari camp lies in one of East Africa’s most scenic national parks, home to a rich tapestry of habitats, from open plains and shimmering lakes to swamps and grassy low mountains.

By day, witness elephants wading through the lake’s silvery waters and embark on thrilling game drives across the vast savannah, tracking iconic wildlife such as white and black rhinos, lions, buffalo, and giraffes. You’ll also have the chance to explore the waterways on an exhilarating boat safari or enjoy catch-and-release fishing for a more tranquil adventure.

As night falls, return to the comfort of your luxurious tent and gather around a roaring fire for a traditional Kugisha supper, sharing stories under a canopy of stars with fellow guests.

After your final night in Akagera, take to the skies by helicopter and soar toward the lush, mist-covered Volcanoes National Park—where a whole new wildlife chapter awaits.

Accommodation: Magashi Camp (3 nights)

Breathe in the crisp mountain air as you arrive at your luxurious sanctuary nestled in the ancient volcanic highlands: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, your home for the next three nights. Set at the base of the majestic Virunga Mountains, this exclusive retreat features elegant, free-standing lodges and suites perched above a hidden garden of fragrant eucalyptus trees, blending seamlessly into the natural surroundings.

Beyond the luxury and tranquility lies the heart of your journey: the rare and powerful experience of encountering wild mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This region is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining population of these majestic creatures, offering you the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come face-to-face with them on an unforgettable trek.

Led by expert guides, your gorilla trek begins in the mist-shrouded bamboo forests, where you’ll hike through dense foliage and climb through fern-filled trails. The moment you encounter a gorilla family feeding, playing, and resting in the greenery is both humbling and exhilarating—a memory that will stay with you forever.

After a day of thrilling adventure, return to the serenity of Gorilla’s Nest to unwind. Lounge by the infinity pool gazing over the forest canopy, indulge in healing treatments at the signature One&Only Spa rooted in African wellness traditions, and savour exquisite meals crafted from fresh, local Rwandan ingredients, with menus that change daily to delight and surprise.

To further enrich your journey, we recommend an immersive visit to a nearby village. Engage with local craftspeople, enjoy traditional music and dance, and gain meaningful insight into the vibrant culture and spirit of Rwanda.

Following your final evening in this magical corner of the country, you’ll be collected by helicopter, ready to embark on the next chapter of your extraordinary adventure.

Accommodation: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest (3 nights)

Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Nyungwe Forest, a vast and ancient rainforest that rises to dizzying heights. Your journey continues at the stunning One&Only Nyungwe House, a luxury resort nestled amidst this untamed wilderness. Surrounded by rolling fields and a lush tea plantation, the resort embodies sustainability and supports the local community, allowing you to connect with the land in a meaningful way.

Your villa, one of the elegantly designed wooden clusters, offers a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by nature, with panoramic views of the national park’s verdant expanse. The next three days offer an exclusive introduction to Rwanda’s vibrant culture and fascinating wildlife.

Embark on thrilling chimpanzee treks with expert guides, explore the forest canopy bridge for breathtaking views, and enjoy immersive birding experiences and nature walks filled with awe-inspiring encounters. When not exploring the forest, discover the intricacies of the tea plantation, or indulge in a range of holistic wellness treatments and massages at the serene spa, offering a perfect balance of relaxation and rejuvenation.

On your final evening, dine under the starry sky, reflecting on the magic of your Rwandan adventure. The next day, a helicopter will whisk you away to Kigali Airport for your onward journey.
