Akagera National Park

Destination Overview

The relatively warm and low-lying plains of Akagera comprise savannah, woodland, wetland and a dozen lakes. In partnership with African Parks, they aim to transform the National Park into a world-class location to experience a safari. The largely open expanse is ideal for game viewing, and steps are being taken to ensure Big Five roam the park in greater number over the course of time. The park is relatively small and is roughly a 3-hour drive from Kigali. In addition to guided Big 5 game drives, Akagera also offers private boat trips, sunset cruises, and night drives - activities to enjoy the most prominent wildlife-rich Rwanda destinations.

Where To Stay In Akagera National Park

1. Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Ruzizi is a luxury eco-lodge located on the banks of Lake Ihema. Its nine tents are set back from Ihema’s serene shores and hidden among swaying palms and fruiting fig trees.  They flank a thatched reception and dining area, and wooden walkways lead to a stunning deck that hangs over the lake. It contains a central fire pit and is the perfect spot for a morning cup of coffee or post-dinner digestif.

With a 20-guest maximum, Ruzizi is an intimate retreat. Each tent boasts an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, a dressing area, and a cozy queen bed (alternatively, guests can request two beds). All of Ruzizi’s tents enjoy shaded verandas containing campaign chairs, and a tree-trunk table.
