Amboseli National Park

Destination Overview

“The Home of the African Elephant”

A few distance from Nairobi lies this park which is among the most popular in Kenya, Second in popularity after the legendary Masai Mara, Amboseli National Park not only offers great game viewing but is also the place to go for the best views of the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro; The world's tallest free-standing mountain actually backdrops this small but ever popular park and it peeps every morning upon the sun rise and you will have the luxury to enjoy the breath taking views from your stay facility or while  enjoying an early morning game drive. The name "Amboseli" comes from a Maasai word meaning "salty dust", and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close. There's great big game viewing as well - especially around the Amboseli's wetland areas - although it's a popular and busy park at the best of times so expect to share your sightings with other visitors.

Its proximity to Nairobi makes it easily accessible by road or air, Amboseli is an area of low scrubby vegetation and open grassy plains, all of which makes for easy game viewing. Accommodation is available at several luxury safari lodges and you'll explore the park on game drives, horse-back safaris and guided nature walks which is highly dependent on your stay lodge/ safari camp.

Compact enough to experience in a day or two, Amboseli National Park is included on most Kenya safari itineraries and combines well with a Masai Mara Safaris & Tsavo National Park, Close by lies Chyulu Hills National Park, a small conservation area based around dramatic, ancient volcanic hills that offer great views of Mount Kilimanjaro and that are home to a range of animals that include elephant, buffalo, leopard and many antelope species.

An Amboseli safari can also be combined with several Tanzanian parks. Mount Kilimanjaro National Park and Arusha National Park lie just across the border and are the closest but the highlights of Northern Tanzania - the Serengeti, Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater - are easily accessible from this region.

What Other Travelers have to say about Kibo

“In sync with Nature”

Kibo is special. This lovely gem nestled in the Amboseli National Park caters for the traveler who wants to enjoy nature in all its fullness. There are tents as well as lodge rooms which give you a sense that you are in the wild-and still with all the proper necessities one needs e.g. hot water, mosquito nets and every tent has a veranda outside that faces Africa’s highest mountain. Was referred to by their Facebook page that has adequate information and I have to admit, my time there was nothing but lovely. I enjoyed the food too as well as their highly refreshing swimming pool.

Set in the heart of its own 3,000-acre private conservancy and in one of the richest game areas in Kenya. Tawi Lodge is an eco-award-winning lodge, combining unpretentious comfort with subtle accents of style coupled with traditional East African hospitality.

What an incredible experience

The staff and management helped create an experience that is memorable, soul building, relaxing. The animals who visited the watering hole on the property just added to the magic… Elephants, giraffe, Eland, zebra but a few of the guests. Thank you for a wonderful time.

Ol Tukai Lodge shares in the rich cultural history of Amboseli involving The Maasai Community, The Colonial Government and The Early European explorers. The culmination of all these defines their hospitality offering of authentic African Safari experience and culture. The lodge opened its doors in 1996, on the original setup for the film crew who shot Snow at Kilimanjaro in 1948 starring Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward and Ava Gardner – an adaptation of The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories, a compendium of short stories authored by Ernest Hemingway that was published in 1961. The lodge is strategically located at the heart of Amboseli National Park. As such, it is designed to take advantage of its scenic environment; Mt. Kilimanjaro and the abundant wildlife of Amboseli, making it a world-renowned spot to observe African Elephants.
